; This article aims to establish the meaning that Döblin attributes to mimesis. It is certainly not the « reproduction » or the « reflection » of pre-existing facts: this particular realism is a betrayal by the « literary hacks » of the « epic », a notion that Döblin tries to redefine; neither is it the « expression » of a particular truth, restricting the novel’s scope to that of an educational message (political, moral, etc). The mimesis is a « doing », an « experiment », a « test », which the ultimate aim of creating knowledge: it is only as such that it permits the « epic », by triggering a radical overhall of the means of representing. The paradox in this is that the mimesis does not then refer to the epic genre (as defined by Hegel for example) so much as to what which arose in opposition to it, and which Bakhtine refers to as the carnivalesque.
